Another Lifeline for Bad Debt
Bangladesh Bank has extended another restructuring opportunity for troubled borrowers, allowing those with Tk 1,000 crore or more in unpaid loans as long as 15 years to repay, including a two-year grace period. While policymakers argue that such measures can support viable businesses and reduce the burden of non-performing loans, repeated concessions raise concerns over repayment discipline, accountability and whether restructuring is addressing the banking crisis or merely postponing it.

Messi and the Hardest Goodbye

What the New Pay Scale Means for Private-Sector Jobs
Bangladesh’s ninth National Pay Scale significantly improves government salaries and strengthens the appeal of public-sector careers. But the bigger labour-market concern may be the widening gap between secure government employment and a private sector struggling with low starting salaries, weak investment, uncertain wage growth and limited job creation. He says excessive dependence on exports, global finance and imported food can leave developing economies vulnerable to external shocks. Patnaik advocates stronger domestic markets, greater agricultural self-sufficiency, capital controls, an expanded public sector and a rights-based welfare system as key elements of an alternative development strategy.

Why Bangladesh Should Think Twice About the Mecca Pact
Bangladesh should carefully assess the strategic costs of joining the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, according to an analysis of the proposed military alignment. The key concerns include the absence of an immediate military threat, obligations under collective defence, possible complications in relations with Gulf partners, risks to energy and maritime trade, and the economic cost of becoming involved in conflicts unrelated to Bangladesh’s security. The analysis argues that maintaining strategic flexibility and a non-aligned foreign policy may better serve the country’s long-term interests.

Trade Talks Expand Into a Wider Strategic Partnership
Bangladesh’s relationship with the United States is moving beyond tariff negotiations into a broader economic and strategic partnership. The two countries are increasingly engaging on trade, investment, energy, labour standards, technology and security cooperation. While Bangladesh remains competitive in the US apparel market, its dependence on a narrow export base continues to create significant risks. The long-term challenge is not only to secure favourable market access, but also to strengthen domestic competitiveness, diversify exports and build greater institutional capacity.
